Chennai:
Indian Maritime University has yet to act on a Madras High Court interim order to allow Associate Professor in Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering in the school of Naval Architecture in Chennai M S Ravi Sharma to join duty.
A harassed Sharma, who has been visiting the university since Friday with the copy of the High court order passed on Wednesday, has been made to run from pillar to post as he went to the university to submit his joining report.
“I came here on Friday. The vice-chancellor Capt M Baweja was on leave and Vasudevan, the finance officer who was the acting registrar in charge, asked me to come on Monday,” he said.
“When I again came here on Monday, the vice-chancellor was not seen in his office. I was told that he is working from the guesthouse. So I went there to meet him. He was rude initially when I met him. When I told him that he is a government servant and should be available 24 hours, he quietened down,” said Sharma, who had resigned his job as an engineer in a Danish firm in the United States after getting the appointment order.
“The officials are not giving me any reason on why they were not letting me join the university despite an order from the High court which is now in a public forum as the media has reported it and I have a copy of the order,” he said.
“I waited till 7.20 pm. They orally told me that they are ready to face contempt of court and won’t give anything in writing,” said Sharma.
When Express contacted Capt Baweja, he refused to comment on the issue. When queried on whether he was rude to Sharma, Capt Baweja said that he was not rude to anyone.
Interestingly, Sharma is one of the 12 appointments, mostly from Indian Institutes of Technology, that were cancelled by the university. This too after Union Shipping Ministry giving a clean chit to the recruitments by Chennai-based Indian Maritime University stating that there had been minor procedural inadequacies, which were resolved.
Then Union shipping secretary P K Sinha said that he had met all faculty recruited by then vice-chancellor Raghuram. “They are highly qualified and suited for the job. The selection will not be cancelled,” he said. But despite his assurances, the university cancelled the appointments.
