TN urged to set up separate park for apparel industry in Chennai

Chennai:
Chennai Apparel Association has urged the state government to set up a separate park for apparel industry in the city that will have manufacturing and wholesale market under one roof.

Addressing a press conference here on Friday, the chairman of Chennai Apparel Association V Gnanam highlighted the plight of the apparel industry, which is scattered outside the city due to non-availability of space in the city and high rents.

“Often manufacturers have to shift their units outside the city as they don’t get adequate space as well as rents are high. This affects lakhs of families who are directly or indirectly dependent on the industry,” he said.

The association also thanked Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa for providing training facility for women in rural areas in the districts to enhance their skills in apparel stitching and providing them with latest technology apparel stitching machine.

“This will provide them initial encouragement to start apparel manufacturing unit,” he said.

Meanwhile, in a bid to bring all apparel retailers of the state under one roof, Chennai Apparel Association is organizing two-day Future Fashion 8th Annual Garment Fair at Chennai Trade Centre from July 15.

The fair is expected to be inaugurated by Tamil Nadu Governor K Rosaiah.

“The main aim of the fair is to bring all retailers of Tamil Nadu under one roof and one place to place the orders to the manufacturers for the upcoming festival seasons thereby saving valuable time,” he said.
