Cellphones have more computing power than NASA's first moon mission

Chennai:

The cell phones now have more computing power than what National
Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) had when they put man on
moon, according to former director of global cyber security in US
department of Homeland Security.

He said the cyberspace is a man-made domain and one can’t change it
but then the governments as well as people could make it safe.

He said that there is less awareness in india about protecting their
digital assets. Highlighting how serious United States is in
protecting the financial assets of banks, he said the banking sector
has asked the former national security advisor to head the security
operations.

He said banks in India should take the threat seriously as the country
is now emerging as a wealthy state.

He also highlighted the compromise of security happens when the law
enforcement agencies don’t share information. Agencies like FBI don’t
share information, this makes the bad guys feel safer, he said.

Talking about the US identifying four People’s Liberation Army
Officers for hacking and economic espionage, he said the Chinese
wanted to know how they got caught stealing the information. “We could
do nothing about it. Why should we teach them to be better in stealing
the information,” he said.

He also cited an instance when CISCO approached Chinese to develop its
routers as it did not have a technical workforce. But Chinese already
had stolen the plans.

T V Gopal, professor, department of computer science and engineering,
Anna University, said that high level cryptographic tools are not 100
per cent foolproof to protect the networks. “We should know where to
go in for paper back up and where we should focus on technology,” he
said.

Interestingly, Gopal is for core courses on information security in
the postgraduate level. To a query on why shouldn’t the government
introduce courses on information security at school level, he said the
subject would be too heavy for children.
