Storage levels in 30 reservoirs of southern states hit a 10-year low

Southern states, including Tamil Nadu is struggling to quench the thirst of its people as the storage levels in the 30 reservoirs has hit a 10 year low.

As per the data available with Central Water Commission, the 30 reservoirs have nine per cent less water than it had during last year.

The data states that the current storage levels in 30 reservoirs in Southern region, which includes Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu is 13 per cent of total storage capacity. The total storage capacity of the reservoirs is 51.37 billion cubic metres (BCM) and currently the reservoirs have only 6.58BCM.

The storage during corresponding period of last year was 22 per cent and average storage of last 10 years during corresponding period was 25pc of live storage capacity of these reservoirs.

Storage during current year is less than the corresponding period last year and also than the average storage of last 10 years during the corresponding period, the study stated.

Interestingly, states like Punjab, Odisha and Chhattisgarh have better storage than last year for corresponding period, a release stated.
