BJP govt to transform VOC port into a high volume port of South

Chennai:

The Union government’s announcement of allocating Rs 11,635 crore for
development of Outer Harbour in VOC Port in Tuticorin under phase one
of the project would boost the capacity of the port.

The initial plan was to develop the Outer Harbour Project in four
different phases at an estimated cost of Rs 23,432 crore featuring 17
berths, VOC Port sources said.

The development of Outer Harbour would include constructing five
berths – two for coal and three for containers with capacity addition
of 97.5 MTPA.

Currently, the present capacity of V O Chidambaranar Port is at 33.34
Million Tonnes and it is planned to increase it to 85 Million Tonnes
upon completion of Innner Harbour Development projects.

The Detailed Project Report of the project was released by former
Union Shipping Minister G K Vasan earlier this year.

It is believed the Outer Harbour Project would augment the Port
capacity by another 328 Million Tonnes. Upon completion of the Inner
Harbour development projects currently underway in many stages and the
proposed Outer Harbour Project, the Port capacity will increase to 413
Million Tonnes, thereby making V O Chidambaranar Port a very high
volume Port in the region
