JICA prepares master plan to develop Ponneri

C Shivakumar

Chennai:

Ponneri will soon become one of the industrial hubs for Japanese
companies as a master plan is being prepared to develop the area.

A senior representative of Japan International Cooperation Agency
Ichiguchi Tomohide told Express that Ponneri has been decided as one
of the three industrial hubs to be developed in three southern states.

The other two nodes are planned at Vasant Narasapur at Tumkur in
Karnataka and Krishnapatnam near Nellore, in Andhra Pradesh.

He said currently JICA has started preparing a masterplan for Ponneri.
The masterplan would include industrial parks, residential area
besides commercial space.

Interestingly, JICA is loking at developing around 3,00 hectares in the area.

To a query whether JICA is also looking at other alternative site to
develop the node, Tomohide said that Ponneri has been selected by all
the stakeholders. “There is no chance to again go back. We have
started the study to prepare the masterplan,” he said.

He also said the nodes won’t be put before the appraisal committee on
CRZ, Infrastructure and Miscellaneous Projects and New Construction
and Industrial Estates Projects under the new government.

“We already got the clearance from the Union government for the node,” he said.

To a query on pollution level in Ponneri, Tomohide said that they are
looking into it. “The study has just started. We are looking at
several factors including the thermal plants in the area,” he said.

He also said that the whole industrial corridor between Krishnapatnam
and Ponneri won’t be developed. “Our focus is only to develop the
nodes. But we will be looking infrastructure and connectivity to the
nodes like highways and railways,” he added.

  1. Firstly Smart city should be adjacent to the main city which is an extension.
PPP Private Public Partnership may be new to India but it has been there in USA even 30 years back,This was initially IBM from idea.

When we talk of smart city here. chennai border is Kosthalaiyar river i.e Karnodai bridge NH5 on the south western side corner on the river border. Main issue is smart city water requirement is from the river usually 7 KM from river water is Salty. the stretch from Karnodai bridge on NH5
side and stretches till TPP Thiruvellore Ponneri Panjetti bridge 400 feet road on the Northern side. On the south eastern side if they stretch till TH road to the starting point of the 400 feet TPP road in the North east. Wish they should also make a provision for free traffic flow for Truck and vehicular traffic and truck loads via Tirupati. Thiruvattiyur poneeri road should have a pocket road connecting straight to Thirupati with a wider roiad as big as 100 feet or more connecting NH5 crossing to Tirupati
