Chennai:
After Union Urban Development Minister Venkaiah Naidu gave his stamp
of approval for extending Chennai Metro Rail’s Phase I project to
Wimco Nagar at Tiruvotiyur, plans are on add an additional station in
the stretch.
It is learnt that of the additional nine kilometer stretch, 2.2 km
would be underground, while the rest would be elevated stretch.
Sources told Express that the initial proposal was to have seven
stations in the nine kilometer stretch between Washermenpet to Wimco
Nagar in Tiruvotiyur.
These include Korukkupettai, Tondiarpet, Toll Gate, Thangal, Gowri
Ashram, Tiruvottiyur and Wimco Nagar.
It is now understood that Chennai Metro Rail is planning to add an
eighth station. “This station will come after Washermenpet in the
underground stretch,” sources revealed. Initially, the 2.2km
underground stretch was to have only Korukkupettai station.
Sources said that the station has yet to be named. “This could be done
only after the clearance from the Union government,” sources added.
Meanwhile, the Union cabinet has yet to give the approval for
extending the project. Japan International Cooperation Agency (Jica),
a governmental agency of Japan which is funding the project, said it
has yet to receive any such proposal from the Union government. A
senior representative of JICA, Ichiguchi Tomohide said that, “JICA is
unaware of the project being extended to Wimco Nagar.”
It is learnt that the project after getting the approval from Cabinet
could be sent to JICA for additional funds. The earlier estimate for
extending the project was worked out at Rs 3,001 crore. This is likely
to cost further.
Meanwhile, Chennai Metro Rail has appointed a consultant who will
provide design of the stations, viaduct besides any other such changes
on the newly added stretch.
But the real challenge before the metro rail would be to acquire land
in the stretch. With land acquisition now becoming a tough affair with
he new Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land
Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act, 2013, it is to be
seem what sort of amendment is being brought about by union urban
Development ministry.
Plans are already on to bring in a new amendment to acquire land
without diluting the compensation and rehabilitation and resettlement
provisions. A circular has been sent to the state government seeking
its view to amend Metro railways (operations and maintenance) Act,
2002 to avoid any legal complications in
construction, operation and maintenance of metro rail projects.
