Chennai:
Asia’s biggest vegetable, fruit and flower market in Koyambedu is
planning to have two to three parking lots for two-wheelers on trial
basis, an Amma Unavagam besides a new toilet built at the premises.
A Market Management Committee (MMC) source told Express that the
parking lots at the market premises is being planned on trial basis.
“We are awaiting the sanction from the officials concerned,” the
source said.
Initially, plans are on to have the parking lot near the fruit market.
“This could create space for parking of 50 two-wheelers and cycles,”
the sources said.
He also said that tenders are being floated for constructing a toilet
worth Rs 3 crore. It will be finalized by November 26, the source
said.
The toilets in the market have been in a pathetic condition. “One
can’t step in as it is hardly maintained. Even animals would think
twice on using the toilet,” a trader said.
“If they are building a new toilet, then first MMC should plan of
maintaining it rather than giving it to a private operator,” another
vegetable trader said on condition of anonymity.
Meanwhile, there is something to cheer for Koyambedu market workers,
truck drivers, rickshaw pullers, loadmen and other employees as MMC is
planning to open a Amma Unavagam catering only to market personnel.
“Earlier a site was finalized near Electricity board office opposite
to the market. But we found it is not suitable enough. A new site is
to be allocated. The approval would be got during the next committee
meeting of MMC,” the source said.
Interestingly, this would benefit a sizeable number of people who have
to depend on roadside stalls to satisfy their hunger pangs. It is
learnt that a total of 14,015 trucks visit Koyambedu market per day.
Meanwhile, officials have rectified the glitches in the new machine
imported from Czechoslovakia to convert waste generated from Koyambedu
wholesale fruits and vegetable market into electricity.
The plant is now generating 500 to 700 units of power. However, there
is a issue over erractic power generation. “This is due frequency of
electricity board not matching with our frequency,” said a Ramky
official.
