Chennai:
Banking transactions were hit in several branches of Indian Bank after
Bharat Sanchar Nigam communication links were snapped during a
demolition carried out by Highways department to make way for a
service road besides the busy EVR Salai near Nelson Manickam Road
junction.
Customers were seen waiting for hours as bank officials said that the
link would be restored anytime.
Many like Rajesh were seen fretting at the Koyambedu branch of Indian
Bank as officials helplessly turned away the customers. “We are
encountering the problem since morning and most of the branches of our
bank have been affected,” said a bank official on condition of
anonymity.
This also put many of the customers in a state of helplessness as
Thursday is a Central Government holiday and most of the offices will
remain closed.
A BSNL spokeswoman Vijaya said that some of the links were partially
restored by temporarily laying overhead cables. Interestingly, several
Indian Bank branches and Life Insurance Corporation offices would have
to wait a little longer for the links to be restored.
“The overhead cables are a temporary solution. We are negotiating with
Highways department for laying underground solutions,” Vijaya said.
Interestingly, communication link to key defence installations and
Indian Space Research Centre in Sriharikota were restored.
Communication lines, including mobile, broadband and landline
connections across several parts of the city besides two cables of
southern telecom region were
hit following the demolition drive. Each cable has a capacity to
provide 1 gigabyte of broadband services.
The demolition was carried out to make way for service road which will
be opened for public after a few metres of EVR Salai will be closed
for laying a 47 metre flyover span linking EVR Salai and Nelson
Manickam junction.
