After rescue operations, TN now focuses on providing relief to Chennaites

Chennai:
The rescue operations is nearly over as the state government is now planning to
focus on providing relief to the flood hit areas in Chennai and it is likely that a coordinated effort involving Central agencies would commence on Monday.
The relief operations would begin soon as the plan of operation would be finalized
on Sunday. It would involve the Central agencies, including National Disaster Response Force, said deputy inspector general (DIG) operations S S Guleria after emerging from a closed-door  stakeholder meeting organized by the state government.
The in-house meeting was held at the Secretariat where the officials, including
army, navy and air force chalked out plans for relief operation.
“We have rescued till now 17,000 people and fished out eight bodies,” said Guleria,
adding that this was the biggest
deployment of NDRF.
“We have till now provided the flood-hit with 20,000 food packets and 18,000 water
bottles. There is a seamless
coordination between the state and the rescue agencies,” he added.
Interestingly, NDRF has deployed 25 teams (100 personnel) in Chennai, followed by 10
in Kancheepuram, 12 in
Thiruvallur, one in Cuddalore and two in Pondicherry.
“We had teams from as far as Guntur and Bangalore and also mobilized teams from
Bhatinda in Punjab,” he said.
The stake holders meeting was attended by top bureaucrats, including revenue secretary.
Colonnel Antony Grossy (General Staff) operations told Express that Indian Army has
70 teams in place of which 60 are
operating in Chennai. Another 10 is being deployed in Arakonam. “The teams have been
pooled from Bangalore,
Secundrabad and Delhi,” he said.
“We were there on November 15th and 16th but then the situation was not that bad.
Then again on December 1, we were
stationed in Chennai,” said Col Grossy.
“The rescue and relief operations in the city would continue till the state
administration requires our help. It also
depends upon the weather,” he said
