Madras Fertilizers Limited has been directed by National Green Tribunal to suspend its commercial operation till it gets clearance from Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board over discharging its effluents into Cooum River.
The National Green Tribunal gave the direction after state pollution control board has stated that MFL .did not take adequate measure to prevent discharge of effluent. Interestingly, TNPCB has already issued a show cause notice to TNPCB earlier this year.
The TNPCB has stated that the component of effluent treatment plant was not under operation for treating cooling tower blow down effluent
Oen P Edwin Wilson has urged the NGT to direct officials to prevent encroachment along the rivers and the to end sand mining. The tribunal adjourned the hearing to January 27.
