CBI conducts surprise checks at Chennai airport following tip off on duty evasion by customs officials

Central Bureau of Investigation conducted surprise checks at Chennai Airport’s Anna International Terminal early Friday morning after getting information that customs officials were evading duties while clearing goods.

CBI sources told Express that surprise checks were conducted by anti-corruption branch after they got a tip off that customs officials evaded duties while clearing goods, including gold.

The raid was conducted by a 12 member team at around 1.30 to 2am and lasted till 5 to 6am.

Airport Authority of India sources said that the routine surprise checks were conducted following a tip off over evasion activities by customs. “It is between CBI and customs and airport authority has no role to play,” said sources.

Interestingly, no arrests were made. “We have collected some documents and after analysing it, we may decide further course of action,” CBI said.
