Chennai:
Cash transactions have been hit as ATMs at several parts of the city are yet to open and those opened were shut within 45 minutes due to unavailability of shelves to cater to new Rs 500 and Rs 2, 000 currencies.
It is for the second consecutive day that ATMs at several parts of the city are not functional. People who were afraid of long queues to exchange currencies were waiting for the ATMs and cash depositing machines to function.
“This is the second day, I am surviving with Rs 100. I was hoping to withdraw some money from the ATM so that I am cash-secure,” says Rajan, who works in a private software company.
Currently, ATMs are provided with only Rs 100 denomination currency as it doesn’t have the shelves to cater to the new Rs 2,000 and Rs 500 denomination currencies. This could mean that the ATMs will have to be tinkered to fit in the new currencies to meet the demand of people, said a bank official.
N Kamakodi, City Union Bank managing director, while stressing on the need for people to try out digital wallets, said that one-third of City Union Bank ATMs are functioning.
He also said that grocery shops, which are dependent on cash transaction should change over to point of sale devices.
But then cash has been an essential part of common man’ s daily purchase starting from buying milk, newspaper, to boarding a bus to reach his destination, says Vignesh. “We should first create an infrastructure for cashless transaction before embarking on such mission,” he said.
Interestingly, the lack of cash among people has already affected hotels, Koyambedu wholesale market. grocery stores and many other industries. The usually busy shopping centres in the city have become desolate as people are trying to save in the precious Rs 100 currencies after Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 became defunct.
