Chennai:
Income Tax department sleuths on Friday searched more than 12 places on NSC Bose Road in Sowcarpet after getting intelligence inputs that traders are allegedly selling gold at a premium by taking in demonetised currencies of RS 500 and Rs 1,000 in the local Hawala market.
The raid by Income Tax department comes in the wake of similar raids happening in Delhi, Mumbai, Amritsar, Ludhiana and other major cities, targeting hawala operators who were converting invalid notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 to valid legal tender.
All the 12 places are located in NSC Bose Road and we are verifying the intelligence inputs, said Income Tax sources.
It is learnt that searches were conducted on Swarna Shilpi Jewellers.
The raids are also happening after Central Board of Direct Taxes officials have asked Income Tax department to keep strict vigil on illegal movement of cash and suspicious transactions after the demonetisation of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currencies.
Income tax sources said that the searches are carried as traders are trying to legalise the invalid currencies by cutting deals like exchanging high currency notes for lower denomination notes at a premium or swapping the scrapped denomination currencies for buying bullion and foreign currency.
Sources said that many shopkeepers will be using back-dated forged bills to make hoarded money legal.
