Indian Coast guard has apprehended two Sri Lankan fishing boats along with 10 crew for violating the India- Sri Lanka International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL).
The arrest of two fishing boats comes in the wake of Sri Lankan Navy killing a Indian fisherman and injuring two others while they were fishing between Dhanushkodi and Katchatheevu off the Tamil Nadu coast.
Indian Coast Guard said that the Coast Guard vessel Arnvesh while carrying out surveillance apprehended the two Sri Lankan fishing boats ‘ Manoj’ (IMUL-A-0689-MTR) and ‘ Kalanaputha-03’ (IMUL-A-0137 TLE) along with fie crew each whilst fishing 50 miles South East of Nagapattinam which is four miles within Indian waters.
The boats along with 10 crew were escorted to Karaikal and were handed over to Coastal Security Group (CSG) Nagapattinam.
The arrest of the two Sri lankan fishing vessels has happened after a long time, sources said.
The fishermen issue soured ties between India and Sri Lanka when then Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa accused the Sri Lankan Navy responsible for the attacks as well as arrest of Tamil Nadu fishermen and urged then Prime Minister to take strong diplomatic initiative, including intervention at the highest level.
The arrest of Indian fishermen by Sri Lankan Navy resulted in Indian Coast Guard apprehending Sri Lankan fishermen violating the International Maritime Boundary Line.
This had resulted in Centre intervening and hosting talks in Delhi to find a amicable solution. This resulted in repatriation of both Indian and Sri Lankan fishermen.
