Department of Atomic Energy on Thursday said it has no
plans to dump nuclear waste from any nuclear plant and said it is shocked over reports
that Solicitor General R Nariman alleged that the Union government has decided
to use the pits at Kolar Gold Fields gold mines to dump nuclear waste from
Koodankulam.
Reacting to reports, chief spokesperson of department of
atomic energy and head of public awareness division of DAE in Mumbai S K
Malhotra told Express that, “there is not even an iota of truth in the press reports
which quote an affidavit filed by the solicitor general in the Supreme Court that
the Central government has decided to use the pits of KGF gold mines, which
have long remained unused, as dumping yard for the waste created at the nuclear
power plant at Koodankulam.
He said that DAE is perturbed by such insuniations and
wanted to know on what basis such allegations are made.
He said the allegations by the solicitor general as
claimed by the news reports is totally wrong and DAE has no plans to dump
nuclear waste from any nuclear plant. “We are absolutely shocked by such
allegations,” he said.
