Chennai:
National Human Rights Commission has set a deadline of
six weeks for the state director general of police to file a report over the
allegations of violent incidents in Ramanathapuram and security arrangements in
the area.
NHRC issued the order after a petition was filed by World
Human Rights Commission & Rescue Center-New Delhi chairman Saravanan Karuppasaamy.
Karuppasaamy has alleged that security was lax in the
region following the death of a sub-inspector in an incident on October. He alleged
in his petition that after the incident, the security in Ramanathapuram was lax
during the Thevar jayanthi celebrations.
He alleged in his petition that this resulted in the
death of nine persons in two different incidents in Ramanathapuram. In one
incident, three persons --- M Sivakumar(25),V Veeramani( 26) and M
Malaikannan(29) were killed by mob. Similarly, in another incident six college
students Jayapandi, Sundara pandian, Vetrivel, Ranjith, Vishnu Priyan, and Jaya
Singh Raja were killed in petrol bomb attack. The petition also alleges that
police has foisted false case against many people after the two violent
incidents. The petitioner has urged the NHRC to issue a direction for CBI probe
in the incident. He also urged NHRC to issue a direction to the state
government seeking a compensation of Rs 25 lakh to those killed in the incident
and Rs 5 lakh for those injured in the incidents.
NHRC in its directive has also warned the director
general of police that if he failed to submit the report than commission may
proceed to take action which its deems proper.
