CBI arrests agent for evading Customs Duty

Sleuths of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Monday arrested a Clearing and Forwarding agent for evading Rs 50 lakh of Customs Duty besides misquoting the Import and Export code of another firm for import.

CBI sources said Radhakrishnan, managing director, Vee Vee Clearing and Forwarding Pvt Ltd, was arrested for evading the customs duty.He is believed to be a benami of a close aide of a minister.

Sources said Radhakrishnan had allegedly used the import and export code of Majestic Impex for the import of air conditioners into the country.

The sources added that Vee Vee Clearing and Forwarding Pvt Ltd had also declared the import as the spare parts of air conditioners while the agent, in fact, imported the Air Conditioners.

Radhakrishnan, according to sources, is reportedly a benami of a close aide of a minister. Subsequently, a case was registered by CBI against Kathirvel, Assistant Commissioner, customs Chennai, Sanjay Kakkar and Mani, both appraisers, Guhan,  Inspector, Saibudeen, proprietor, M/s. Majestic Impex, Sheik Parith, an importer, Basheer Ahammed, an importer, and Balamurugan, clerk of Vee Vee Clearing and Forwarding including Radhakrishnan.
The CBI Court granted the custody of the accused to the CBI for the next two days for further investigations.

  1. Misuse of IEC is a big issue & fairly beyond the control of government & there is no way any government official could find out until there is specific intelligence.

    Mis-declaration of goods also won't be known to Customs Officials who are based in their offices, processing documents electronically except those who are in the field directly incharge of physical inspection of goods. Or customs intelligence could only find it out but definitely not those who are incharge of computational work. With manifold increase in international trade, bonafide belief makes the system run nowadays & many importers risk misusing this presumptive trust of customs

    A smuggler hell-bent to smuggle would do it anyway & doesn't need any blessings from any politician. Most of the times such smugglers simply use the name of some politician, without even the politician knowing it. Politicians today are a victim of the social wave of civil society against them, irrespective of whether they are clean or not.
