Chennai Customs gives green signal to Kattupulli port

Chennai: The Rs 4,675 crore shipyard-cum-port complex at Kattupulli is now a step away from commissioning with the clearance from Chennai Customs for trans-shipment of containerized goods.
While TIDCO officials could not be contacted, Larsen & Toubro sources confirmed the news and said it is an important milestone for the company as now the port is ready to handle containerized cargo.
The Commissioner of Customs (Seaport-Import) Jane K Nathaniel laid the procedure for transshipment of import and export of containerized cargo from Kattupulli minor port under a notice which comes into effect from July 16.

Under the directive, the stipulated procedures to be followed by agencies for transshipment include filing of import general manifest (IGM), amendment of IGM after entry inwards, container bond, movement of import containers to Inland Container depot (ICD) and movement of export containers from ICD to Kattupulli port besides re-export of containers.

L&T sources said the procedure is a follow-up to the Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC) notification earlier declaring Larsen and Toubro’s Kattupalli port as a transhipment facility.

The port, being built by Larsen & Toubro in association with the Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO), is expected to help ease congestion in Chennai port.

The port facilities comprise 1.5-km long northern breakwater, 3-km long southern breakwater, 5-km long navigational channel to a depth of 15 metre and other harbour-related infrastructure.
