Shipping ministry plans to install transponders in fishing boats

In a bid to enhance the coastal security, Union Shipping Ministry is planning to install transponders in fishing boats in the state and across the country to track its movement.

Speaking to reporters after inaugurating the Vessel traffic management System, Union Shipping Minister G K Vasan told reporters here on Friday that the ministry is planning to install transponders in the fishing boats where the state government will also be a stakeholder.

The minister said that the transponder will be linked to a tower to track the movement of the fishing ship. Interestingly, the transponders are being tested by Indian Space research organization to be fitted in the boats.

Meanwhile, the minister also paid a surprise visit to the port hospital to interact with inpatients in the hospital.
