I&B Minister hits out at TN for over-ruling CBFC in Vishwaroopam controversy

Chennai:
Union Information and Broadcasting minister Manish Tewari hit out at the Tamil Nadu government for over-ruling Central Board of Film certification in the Vishwaroopam controversy.

Addressing reporters here on Saturday, the minister termed the Vishwaroopam controversy as unfortunate, he said the power to certify a film “exclusively” wrests with Central government and wondered how can state governments over ride that.

“When the film is cleared by CBFC, do you think the film-maker has to go to the secretariat pleading with politician to get his film screened in the state.  Is the state government ultra vires or intra vires,” he said.

He said the Union government has set up a judicial committee to have a relook at the Cinematograph Act to make it more robust.

He also hit out at Tamil Nadu Attorney General A Navaneethakrishnan’s contention that there were irregularities in the granting of Certification for the film.

“I am a lawyer myself and am extremely anguished by his allegations,” said Tewari. “He should have submitted evidence if any to the court before making such allegations,” he added.
