CWC conducting hydrographic survey of reservoirs

Chennai:

As the water holding capacity of several old dams across India,
including Tamil Nadu, is hit due to silt deposits at the storage
level, Central Water commission has launched remote sensing based
assessment of the base of the storage capacity besides undertaking
hydrographic survey of the reservoirs.

Speaking to reporters after releasing the Tamil Nadu Water Resources
Department Tank Unique Code Book here on Saturday, chairman of Central
Water Commission A B Pandya admitted that there has been a loss of
capacity in the old dams due to siltation.

He said the Union government is undertaking siltation survey on sample
basis to address the issue. “We are still in a thinking process on
what to do about it,” said Pandya.

Interestingly, the state has also raised the issue of siltation in the
dams and sought CWC guidance in carrying out desilting operations in
the dams. Director of State Water Resources Management Agency
Rajagopal said the state has already been conducting  bathymetric
survey to desilt Mettur, Vaigai, Pechiparai, Srivaikundam and Amravati
dams. A detailed project report is being prepared in this regard.

Pandya also said that the dam safety legislation is now under
consultation process. “There was a need for modification in the bill
and we have made these modifications. It is now under consultative
process,” he said.

Meanwhile, the State Water Resources Management Agency has launched a
web enabled GIS based ‘Tamilnadu Water Resources Information System
(www.tnwris.gov.in) for water management in the state. It will provide
data, maps and other non-spatial data so that the departments are
aware about the latest development.

Director of SWaRMA S S Rajagopal said the portal will also provide
data regarding rainfall, agriculture water utilization, water
availability besides ground water information.

Meanwhile, a book on numeric coding of 14,000 water tanks in and
around Tamil Nadu was also released during the occasion.
