US backs India’s efforts to create Consumer Product Safety Authority


RBI to bring out charter on consumer rights


Chennai:

US is backing Indian efforts to help create Consumer Product Safety
Authority in India on the model of America’s Consumer Product Safety
Commission (CPSC) even as RBI said it is working towards bringing out
a charter on consumer rights to curb instances of ponzi and online
lottery schemes.

Delivering the inaugural address of the two day national seminar on
Consumer Product safety, which is sponsored by US Consulate in
Chennai, US Consul general Philip Min said that the key goal of the
seminar is to identify specific action to create Consumer Product
Safety Authority in India on the model of Consumer Product Safety
commission (CPSC) in United States.

He said the seminar is one tangible example of strategic partnership
between the two countries.

Union Ministry of Consumer Affairs (MOCA) secretary K Desiraju said
that India is working towards bring bringing in the amendments in
Consumer Protection Act 1986 which is likely to be passed during the
winter session of the parliament.

He also said that the Union government is planning to create National
Consumer Protection Authority with all the executive and enforcement
powers for redressal of consumer grievances and penal action against
defaulting companies.

He also said the BIS act is under review. “We are planning to include
m ore products under mandatory certification. Currently, there are 107
products,” he said.

Reserve Bank of India executive director Umashankar Paliwal said that
RBI is working towards bringing out a charter on consumer rights to
curb instances of ponzi and online lottery schemes.

This Charter covers Right to Fair Treatment, Right to Transparency,
Fair and honest dealing, Right to Suitability, Right to Privacy, Right
to Grievance Redress and Compensation to the consumers", he said
