India Post to seek NCB help in detecting drugs

Chennai:

India Post in Chennai will be seeking Narcotics Control Bureau help to
train its officials in detecting drugs in parcels, according to
Postmaster General of Chennai City region Merwin Alexander.

Hailing the clerk in Ambattur Post office who raised the alarm after
Nigerian Henry Chidi tried to book the parcels containing ‘hair’ for
South Africa and Guinea through the Head Post Office Ambattur.

“We will be giving an appreciation letter to the clerk for raising the
alarm after he grew suspicious over the weight of the carton box used
to pack the hair appeared to be heavier than usual,” said Alexander.

He also said that postal department doesn’t have any specialised
training to detect drugs. “We will be seeking the help of narcotics
department in this regard,” said Alexander.

A postal department official told Express that this is the first time
such a seizure of drugs has happened. Alexander said this could result
in further checks. “We already have a foolproof system and this could
be strengthened further following this incident,” he added
