Chennai:
The first phase of Cauvery Modernisation Programme is likely to be
taken up by next financial year, according to SWaRMA director S S
Rajagopal.
Rajagopal told Express that the first phase is being carried out after
Union government has impromptu accepted the grant of Rs 11,420 crore
to take up the Cauvery Modernization Programme.
Under the first phase, the state government is preparing a detailed
project report which will be submitted to the Centre by December,
2014, or January next year for carrying out works worth Rs 2,500 crore
to improve Grand Anaicut canal command area.
“Once the DPR is approved, then work will commence by next financial
year,” Rajagopal said.
Interestingly, the programme would be aimed at improving and
rehabilitating the systems in the Cauvery, Vennar and Noyyal
sub-basins, among others.
The project is also aimed at mitigating climate change in the Cauvery
delta region which consists of 18 sub-basins.
