Former president A P J Abdul Kalam on Monday stressed the need for
solar powered economy, smart water grid besides a creative leadership
with integrity for development of the nation.
Delivering 7th Sage-MSE Endowment Lecture on Technology and Economy
for National Development, Kalam stressed the need of energy
independence which should be free from fossil fuels.
Stressing the need to develop vehicles which don’t use fossil fuels,
he said the neeed of the housr is tap solar, wind, nuclear and
hydropower.
He also stated that while the 21st century world is more gearing
towards technology but it still has issues relating to 19th and 20 the
century.
He also stressed on the need for networking of water bodies besides
welcoming the Union government plan to develop 100 smart cities.
“There is a need to study how the economic engine in smart cities can
operate,” he said.
He also said that economic development and creative leadership are
interlinked. Kalam said the prosperity of nation is empowered by
economic development and great human character.
He also stressed the need to provide urban amenities in rural areas.
He said the research and development should focus on green environment
and providing safe drinking water.
A book authored by D K Srivastava, former chairman of Madras School of
Economics was also launched during the occasion. Speaking during the
occasion, Srivastava highlighted the need to clear the fear of many
states on issues pertaining to GST.

Rangarajan said that there is a need to look at modern technology and
change it according to our needs.
