Technical edn in polytechnic colleges hit due to measly funds, says CAG report



Chennai:

Technical education in government polytechnic colleges in the state
was hit during the then DMK regime due to miniscule funds and failure
to reconstitute state board of technical education and training,
according to a Comptroller and Auditor General report.

The report stated that state board of technical education and training
set up to advise the government on general programme as well as
specific individual schemes necessary for bringing about coordinated
development of technical education and training in the state was not
reconstituted after 2008.

The report stated that as against the approved state plan outlay of Rs
3,149 crore for education for 11th five-year plan period (2007-12),
allocation of Rs 241.60 crore (7.67 pc) was made for technical
education out of which only Rs 14.78 crore (6pc) was allocated for
polytechnic colleges.

The report also stated that there were shortages in infrastructure
such as classrooms and laboratories in the government polytechnic
colleges. It also stated that the pass percentage of students in
government polytechnic colleges  decreased from 72 in 2008-11 batch to
47 in 2010-13 batch.
