Traditional businesses in Southern TN looking to expand horizons

Chennai:

Traditional businesses in South Tamil Nadu are now looking to expand
their horizons and are now looking at new avenues so that they don’t
lag behind in global competition, according to a strategy consultant
focusing on business models.

Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday, R Subramaniam Iyer,
chairman of PitchFest Committee, TiECON 2014, said that the shifct has
started happening in areas like Sivakasi and Tuticorin.

The businessmen in these areas were dependent on traditional
businesses like salt or fireworks. But things have started changing as
the children who were educated abroad have new aspirations and want to
expand the business beyond geographies.

And TiECON is planning to target the Southern belt by organizing
PitchFest, a event for budding entrepreneurs to find mentors and
veterans who could help shape their business ideas, at Tuticorin,
Salem, Chennai and Madurai.

Iyer said that a new trend is evolving in the southern belt of Tamil
Nadu which focused only on traditional businesses. “These businessmen
have money and wanted to try out new businesses,” he said.

Talking about Pitchfest 2014, Iyer said Pitchfest 2014 will provide
two parallel platforms – ‘Pitching for funding’ and ‘Pitching for
incubation’ for entrepreneurs to enroll themselves based on exact
needs.

“Also as part of this programme, every finalist of Pitchfest 2014 will
be offered a concrete mentoring programme for an entire year. Since
the bedrock of TiE is mentoring start-ups, TiE Chennai will continue
to play a key role in the success of entrepreneurial ventures,” Iyer
said.

The preliminary rounds will be conducted in Chennai, Madurai, Salem
and Tuticorin on September 20, September 27, October 11 and October 18
respectively. Entries qualifying for finals will be offered a valuable
one-on-one meeting platform to pitch their product or services to
leading venture capitalists and angel investors on October 31, 2014.
