Chennai:
Now you can fill up your passport applications online at your nearest
post office by paying a nominal fee.
India Post and Ministry of External Affairs are in a discussion to
have one-stop passport solutions at Post offices across the country
soon, says Post Master General of Chennai City region Merwin
Alexander.
He says that passport applicants, who are not computer literate, can
go to the post office and get their applications filled online rather
than approaching the agent.
“The people who are not computer literate are dependent on agents who
demand a nominal sum for filling up the applications,” says Alexander.
“Now they can walk into the post office and the online passport
applications would be filled by the postal clerk,” said Alexander.
However, he refused to give any time frame. It is learnt that it could
be launched across the country anytime soon once India Post gets a
unique Log-in ID as well as a Password.
“The issue is we want a one time unique Log-in and a password rather
than logging in every time. We are negotiating this with the Ministry
of External Affairs,” he said.
Interestingly, India Post is also working on a mechanism to regulate
the fee structure to be charged from the applicants while filling in
the application. “It should be remunerative,” he said.
“We are also working on a mechanism where the system of bank challans
could be done away with. It could be paid online from post office,”
said Alexander.
“We want to make the post office a one-stop solution for passports,” he said.
