No official reaction over death of commuter;
Expert says structural quality compromised

Chennai:
A day after 10 feet long blue colour railing weighing approximately 30
kg fell from Chennai Metro rail’s worksite killing
30-year-old software engineer L Giridharan, questions have arisen over
the structural quality of the elevated stretch between Alandur to
Officer Training Academy.
Experts have rejected the theory that a protective Net could have
shielded the motorist. “The structure is huge. The Net is usually
being laid so that the tools don’t fall on the motorists. This is a
case of compromising on the structural safety,” said an expert who has
a expertise on major infrastructure projects of the city.
“The issue would be that the fixing arrangement might not have been
done properly at the ends by the
contractor Nagarjuna Construction Corporation. Since the work is being
done on the busy stretch they should have doubly checked to ensure the
structural stability,” said another engineer on condition of
anonymity.
“Since the 10 feet long railing was a supporting system, it should not
have fallen at all,” said the engineer questioning the safety
procedures being undertaken by Chennai Metro Rail.
Interestingly, the incident also exposed the callousness of Chennai
Metro rail as no official issued any statement or gave any assurance
that the safety of motorists would be ensured. While the contractor
has been blamed and an enquiry has been ordered, there has been no
official reaction. Even the site where the accident has occurred has
been left as it is without any proper protective covering.
While reports claimed of some safety guidelines, a Metro Rail
spokesman said that Metro Rail has enough safety guidelines. “Only it
has to be put into practise by individuals,” he said.
The incident also has a psychological impact on motorists who fear on
what might fall on them when they go under the elevated stretch of
Chennai Metro Rail, said a motorist.
Meanwhile, Chennai Metro Rail spokesman said that L Giridharan’s wife
would be provided the third party insurance. “This is part of the
tender process which the contractor signs stating that he is liable
for third party insurance in case of any accident,” he said.
“The amount would be a huge one as it would take into account his
work, age ad various other factors before giving out the
compensation,” the spokesman saidthe site of Chennai Metro rail’s worksite killing
