Chennai:
High toll rates in the 29 toll plazas owned by private groups has
forced the truckers to urge the state government to take over these
plazas.
President of Tamil Nadu Sand Lorry Owners Association R Muniratam told
Express that the association has urged Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa
to take over the toll plazas run by private agencies and reduce the
toll rates by 50 per cent.
The cost of operating a lorry is difficult with the rise in fuel
prices as well as paying tolls in 41 toll plazas.
He says of the 41 toll plazas, 29 are being owned by private parties
while 12 are being owned by National Highway Authority of India.
He said it is not only sand lorries but also those carrying food and
vegetable products that are also hit.
“There are three toll plazas from Vandalur to Red Hills in the 40 km
stretch. Similarly, there are three toll plazas in the stretch between
Shollinganallur, Perungudi and Thoraipakkam,” he said.
“Why there is a need for so many toll plazas. In other states there is
one at a distance of 140 to 150 kilometre,” he reasoned.
“We urge the Chief minister to remove the toll plazas in Chennai
Corporation limits,” he said.
The yearly income from the toll plazas is Rs 14,200 crore. Vehicle
operators say that while money is being milked form the users, the
quality of roads is also a cause of concern in some stretches
