Revoke decision to derecognise Ambedkar-Periyar Study circle

Chennai:

A group of academicians, researchers and students have demanded that
Indian Institute of Technology, Madras revoke its decision to
de-recognise Ambedkar-Periyar Study circle.

The petition signed by more than 100 petitioners has stated that a
publicly funded national institution should not act in a manner that
contradicts or violates the constitution.

“We appeal to Ministry of Human Resources Development and to heads of
academic institutions to protect, preserve and promote spaces for
informed enquiry and social engagement upholding democratically
established freedoms,” the petition, which is also being forwarded to
Union Minister for Human Resource Development, stated.

“Banning an intellectually vibrant student body is against all
democratic rights vested by the constitution and stifles the
democratic culture so vital to the vibrancy of higher educational
institutions, and a frontal attack on the diversity and pluralism of
our nation,” the petition added.
