Chennai:
Chennai Metro Water is now tapping the priate agriculture wells to
ensure the city gets continuous supply of water to withstand the dry
days.
“We are currently tapping 40 MLD of water from Metro water wells as
well as hired private agriculture wells,” a Metro Water spokesman
said.
“We are also planning to tap another 20 MLD of water from the
agriculture wells,” the spokesman added.
The plan to tap 250 private agriculture borewells have been taken as
per the directions of Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa as Chennai Metro
Water was struggling to maintain city’s water supply due to third
consecutive deficit rainfall in catchment areas.
A Metro Water spokesman said that borewells in Poondi, Tamaraipakkam
and Magaral areas have been identified to convey water through
existing pipeline networks in well fields to Chennai City.
Water is now being pumped from 14 wells from Karani, 17 from
Siruvanoor, 33 from Pullarambakkam, 35 from Movur, 17 from Kilanoor
and Melanoor and 14 from Kandigai, the spokesman said.
The city would also get additional 20 million litres per day water
from 130 agricultural borewells. The water drawn from these new
sources will be conveyed to Puzhal Water Treatment Plant and from
there will be distributed to the City, through the existing pipeline
network, the spokesman added.
