Reliance ROV to provide visuals of under water search for Dornier aircraft

Chennai:

The state of the art Multifunctional Support Vessel (MSV) ‘Olympic
Canyon’ with integrated Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) provided by
Relaince group is continuing with the visual profiling of 1.5 nautical
miles, the area from where the Indian Coast guard Dornier aircraft
along with three crew members went off the radar on the night of June
8.

Inspector General SP Sharma, Commander,Indian Coast Guard (East) told
Express that the ROV will give a consolidated update after scanning
the area.

He said that Indian Navy submarine INS Sindhudhwaj, which was again
deployed in the area on departure of RV Sagar Nidhi did   triangulate
a source transmitting in Band II ( 8-40 Khz) in area.

“This was passed on to Olympic Canyon,” said Sharma, who feels the ROV
has advantage over the NIOT vessel as it will videograph the
underwater stretch.

“Sagar Nidhi was equipped with multi-beam echo sounder, a device
typically used by hydrographic surveyors to determine the depth of
water and the nature of the seabed besides sub-bottom profiler, which
is designed to look below the seafloor at structural geology and
sedimentation patterns. But it never provided us with any visuals,”
said Sharma.

The ROV of Reliance has the ability to undertake the search and rescue
operations even during the night and would provide better quality
pictures to profile the the area visually. It is equipped with echo
sounder and remotely operated underwater camera with projector lights,
said Sharma.

Sharma said the Relliance Vessel as well as the NIOT vessel was
deployed free of cost as a noble gesture towards humanitarian cause of
search and rescue
