Now e-learning for vets a click away!

Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University has revolutionized the veterinary education in the subcontinent by facilitating anytime – anywhere learning for the student community of the profession.

The e-course for Bachelor of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry, which was developed under the National Agricultural Innovation Project (NAIP) of Indian Council of Agricultural Research, has contents for 69 courses offered in nine semesters spread over five years of degree course in 177 credit hours with 101 theory and 76 practical and 3009 lessons, said TANUVAS vice-chancellor Dr R Prabhakaran.

Developed by 79 content developers of TANUVAS in modular object oriented dynamic learning environment (MOODLE) platform, the Rs 22.47 lakh project is supported by 79 co-teachers from outside TANUVAS, he said.

Dr Prabhakaran said content developers were initially exposed to e-content creation procedures, e-content protocols, development of multimedia and animation, working in MOODLE through a number of orientation and training programmes.

“To provide a comprehensive working environment for content developers to create e-content, necessary computer hardware and software were procured and installed setting up two e-learning laboratories – one at Madras Vterinary College, Chennai and other at Vterinary College and Research Institute, Namakkal.

More than 3,000 animations and numerous visuals, pictures and images were developed for inclusion in the lessons besides power point slides with voice overs were developed for each theory lesson and later refined using articulate presenter to make them interactive, Dr Prabhakaran said.

The e-contents were reviewed by 144 external experts from across the country in different subjective disciplines. The e-contents classified year wise and semester wise is hosted online in www.elearnvet.net

Dr J Radhakrishnan, secretary special programme implementation hailed the project and TANUVAS efforts for developing the e-course. He also presented certificates to e-content developers.
