Nadu Food Minister R Kamaraj on Wednesday sought additional rice from the Union
government stating that there is a gap of 18,000 metric tonnes between state
public distribution system and Centre’s allocation
Speaking
at a national seminar on ‘Food Safety – Role of Standards’ attended by Union
Minister of State for Food and Consumer Protection KV Thomas, Kamaraj said the
state is getting 2.96 lakh metric tonnes under various schemes under the public
distribution system while the state’s requirement under PDS is 3.14 lakh metric
tonnes.
There
is a gap of 18,000 metric tonnes which is filled through interim relief from
the Centre, the minister said. He also sought increase in kerosene allocation.
The
minister said that Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa had written to the Prime
Minister Manmohan Singh seeking increase in allocation of kerosene which has
been downsized for the last few months.
The minister said the kerosene allocation had been reduced from 52,806 kilo litres in April 2011 to over 39,000 kl in April this year.
