Safety and security at Kalpakkam nuclear plant reviewed



Chennai:
A delegation of Parliament Standing Committee on Home Affairs headed by Rajya Sabha MP Venkaiah Naidu visited the Kalpakkam nuclear complex to review safety and security measures.

Naidu told Express on Thursday that the committee, which included BJP leader Lal Krishna Advani, was briefed on safety and security at Kalpakkam and Koodankulam nuclear plants following the Fukushima nuclear disaster in Japan.

The committee also held meetings with various officials including Kancheepuram district collector and Chennai Corporation Commissioner, he said.

Naidu said that Advani will be leaving for New Delhi to attend a crucial National Democratic Alliance meeting in New Delhi and will not be able to visit the Chennai Petroleum Corporation Limited in Manali and Chennai Port Trust on Friday.

The committee will be briefed on Friday about the measures taken to beef up coastal security in Tamil Nadu following 26/11 Mumbai blast by the state chief secretary Debendranath Sarangi.. 

Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited sources said the delegation visited Madras Atomic Power Station in Kalpakkam but refused to specify further.
