The development of large container truck parking yard at
Manjambakkam village is likely to be completed within this year, according to
sources.
The project, which was announced during the budget session
in 2011-12, is being developed in an extent of 12 acres at an estimated cost of
Rs 20 crores.
Sources told Express that the yard would accommodate 400
container trucks at a time and with the projected turnover of 1000 trucks per
day, in order to relieve congestion due to parking of trucks along the GNT Road
and Inner Ring Road (IRR) near Madhavaram.
The yard will have a capacity of 70 Light Commercial Vehicle
(LCV); 146 two and three axle trucks and 181 multi axle trucks along with
amenity building, security room, toilet for drivers and convenient shop etc.
The authority has accorded administrative sanction for the
project at an estimated cost of Rs 22 crores.
The tender has been finalized and work started for filling of gravel,
concrete pavement, storm water drain and culverts. It is likely the project
could be completed by July or by the end of this year, sources added.
Sources told Express that the site is strategically located
near the port and the Chennai city. He said
the site is also located near to many warehousing companies and industries. The
parking space has been provided as per the CMDA norms. Each of the parking
sites have been provided with general amenities in addition to the parking lots,
the source added.
The concept design for truck parking and commercial area has
been planned based on the demand estimation for truck parking and the market
survey carried out by the consultant.
The site has been planned based on the flow and size of the
vehicles. The parking lots have been designed in such a way that the bigger
vehicles (Multi axle) are provided with space at the entry to avoid the
blockade of driveways. The entry is designed with broad entry and exit gate of
15 metres to facilitate free movement of bigger vehicles
