Madras University has vowed to take serious action
against institutions that are affiliated to the university if they charge
excess fees from students.
“If there are any complaints about any institution
charging higher fees than the prescribed one, the affiliation of the
institution would be cancelled,” vice chancellor of the university R Thandavan
told reporters after the Supplemental convocation held at Madras University.
Thandavan said that the colleges may not be charging additional
fees at the level of engineering or medical colleges, but then any additional
fee will be affecting the people who are coming from the rural or poor
background.
“We will be initiating action against these institutions
with the help of state government,” he said.
He also said the National Assessment and Accreditation
Council (NAAC) review report has been provided to the university. “I have gone
through the report. It is a favourable one. I am satisfied with it,” Thandavan
said.
“It will be out in the public domain once the NAAC
executive committee passes it,” the vice-chancellor said.
He also highlighted that Madras University has introduced
five new courses including women studies. He said some of the courses are
job-oriented ones.
Earlier the vice chancellor conferred Ph.D degrees to 196
scholars in the faculties of medicine, science, management sciences, commerce,
teaching and arts.A total of 12,378 in-absentia candidates received their
degrees.
