Chennai:
The pollution response capabilities in the coastal areas were
reviewed during the 19th National Oil Spill Disaster Contingency
Plan here on Monday.
The objective of the meeting was to take stock and review
the capabilities, limitations and oil pollution mitigation preparedness of
ports and coastguard in the country.
A coastguard spokesman said the improvement in the
economy has witnessed an increase in energy requirement due to which there is
an increased risk of oil pollution due to collision, grounding or any other
exigencies at sea.
“As a result there is a need to review pollution response
capabilities regularly,” he said.
The meeting was chaired by vice-admiral and director
general of coastguard Anurag G Thapliyal. Senior officers of the coastguard,
delegates from central or state agencies, ports and oil handling agencies were
also present.
