19 km of Cooum river bank to be developed for cycle tracks

Chennai:

Chennai could have 19 km of cycling track along the banks of Cooum if
the Intergrated Cooum River Eco-Restoration Plan is implemented.

As per the plan, all along the Cooum riverbanks a new landscape has
been defined and redesigned paving way for several parks, walkways and
cycletracks.

As per the report prepared under the plan, the cycle track will
provide a new infrastructure for non-motorised mobility along the
Cooum river. “Proposals are completed with almost 50 areas of river
bank vegetation improvement,” the report stated.

Besides there are plans to have 24 new parks which will be designed
along the riverbanks with 22 new walkways connecting the parks.

“Within these areas, there will be recreational space, children
playground and food courts,” the report stated.

There is also a Mangrove Development Plan for the mouth of the Cooum
River and surrounding the Island Grounds as it acts as flood buffers
and bio-barriers against storms and high tides thus saving the coast.

“They are specially adapted to withstand salinity, wave action and can
grow in poor soils thus preventing ground water pollution, the report
stated.

Surprisingly, if one believes that the toxic Cooum river won’t have
any species living other than the mosquitos, they are possibly wrong.
The report although states that there is no representation of fish but
records the diversity of butterflies. Four families of butterflies ---
Dainid egg fly, plain tiger, common migrant or Lemon Emigrant and
Phalantaphalantha are recorded. Even a species of snail besides
insects like Jewel Beetle, Damselfly, dragonfly and spiders and birds
were also recorded.
