Chennai:
After a six-year-old boy was rescued from a 10 foot deep pit at an
illegal chicken stall on Velachery Main Road here, Chennai Corporation
is planning to survey the meat and chicken stalls of the extended
areas to find out if such illegal sumps to dump waste exist besides
planning amendments for stricter regulations to open chicken stalls.
A Chennai Corporation official told Express that Chennai Corporation
is planning to inspect chicken stalls and find out whether such sumps
exist in the extended areas as there is no drainage connection there.
He said that it is unlikely that the core areas of the city would be
having such sumps to dump waste. “Usually the stalls in core areas
link it to sewers. So it is unlikely they may be having such sumps,”
he said.
Interestingly, most of the chicken stalls lack hygiene and are being
operated in a small congested area less than 200 square feet area. An
official says this has happened due to simplification of rules
earlier.
He said that Chennai Corporation is planning to bring in stricter
regulations for chicken stalls by bringing in some amendments to
ensure hygiene as well as sanitation.
Meanwhile, Chennai Metro water has clarified that, “No sewer
connection has been given by the Metro Water to the Chicken Stall at
the Velachery Main Road. A tank has been constructed inside the
premises for the disposal of waste from the Chicken stall. Hence, the
boy rescued from the sewer line is not correct,” Metro Water said.
Metro Water also said that construction of diaphragm chamber has been
made mandatory for the commercial establishment only after having
proper sewer connections.
A senior official also said that Chennai Metro Water is taking action
against hotels and chicken stalls for letting out sewer lines into
storm water drain. He also blamed the hotels and chicken stalls for
choking up the sewer lines by letting out the waste in the sewer
lines. “Our officials are monitoring and are taking action against the
erring hotels as well as chicken stalls along with the help from
Chennai Corporation,” the official said.
