Stamp to commemorate Indian Navy’s blue water capabilities

Chennai:
Hailing Indian Navy’s acquisition of Blue Water capabilities with the launch of multi-band satellite Rukmini developed by Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), the postal department is launching a commemorative postage stamp ‘Project Rukmini’ on Saturday.

Postmaster general of Chennai City region Merwin Alexander said that the commemorative stamps, first day cover and the information brochure can be purchased from the Philatelic Bureaux and counters in Chennai and Pondicherry. Customers can also open a Philatelic deposit account and get the stamps at their doorstep.

Giving out details about the satellite, he said GSAT-7 or INSAT-4F is a multi-band communication satellite, named Rukmini, developed by ISRO. It is the sixth among the stack of seven INSAT-4 series communication satellites which was designed, developed and fabricated by India.

The Indian Navy is the user of the multi-band home-built communication satellite, operational from September, 2013.
According to defense experts, the satellite will enable the navy to acquire blue water capabilities and need not depend on foreign satellites like Inmarsat, which provide communication services to its ships.
