HAROPA vying to help Kamarajar Port develop master-plan to optimally use its resources

Chennai:

After completing 14 years, Kamarajar Port is planning to prepare a
master plan for developing the port in next 10 to 30 years and is
seeking the help of international consultant to help optimally utilise
waterfront and land resources in the port limits.

Interestingly, the fifth biggest North European Port, HAROPA, (Ports
of Le Havre, Rouen and Paris in France) is likely to be the
front-runner to provide the consultancy service for preparing the
masterplan.

Chairman and managing director of Kamarajar Port M A Bhaskarachar said
that they have floated a tender to study the utilisation of waterfront
and land side resources in the port limits including north of North
Break Water and south of South Break Water and adjacent to the land of
Creek and Buckingham Canal outside the ports.

“We are keen to help Kamarajar Port develop the port. We have bid for
the tender,” said Herve Cornede, management board commercial and
marketing director of HAROPA.

The first masterplan for Kamarajar Port (earlier Ennore Port) came
into being after Asian Development Bank approved Project Preparation
Technical Assistance ‘Development Strategies for Madras and Ennore
Ports’. It was was developed by Frederic R Harris who carried out
extensive market survey and furnished the traffic forecast for the
region in five year intervals from 2002-17.

Nine years since the first masterplan was prepared, it was hardly
implemented. It was in 2006, a revised masterplan was prepared but
then lot of changes happened including TNEB engaging in setting up
additional power plants and expansion of existing thermal plants.

Besides, Nissan also had plans to manufacture small cars from its
upcoming facility at Oragadam. The company had plans to scale up the
number of units for exports to 1.8 lakh and had entered into an
agreement with Ennore Port to export cars to European market. These
developments were to be accomodated within the port as such the
masterplan required updation.
