Rs 275 crore recovered from cheque bounce cases alone in Chennai
Chennai:
More than 1.05 lakh cases were taken up in 349 benches of various
courts, including High Court, during the Lok Adalat being held on
Saturday and nearly 20,000 bank related cases were settled and amount
worth approximately Rs 466.54 crore were recovered, according to Tamil
Nadu Legal Services Authority.
A state legal service authority official told reporters that the cases
pertain to bank related issues which include pro-notice, mortgage,
cheque bounce and bank loan. Interestingly, other than the four
benches of Madras High court (two in Madurai and two in Chennai), a
total of 172 benches took up civil cases while 152 benches took up
criminal cases pertaining to cheque bounce. Besides this, 20 benches
of state legal services authority also heard the cases.
The official said that in Chennai alone a total of 10,249 cases were
taken up of which 5,467 cases were settled. A sum of nearly Rs 283
crore was recovered.
Interestingly, in Madras High Court, a total of 206 cases were taken
up of which only six cases were settled and a sum of Rs 3.49 crore was
recovered.
Surprisingly, it was the City Civil Court and Metropolitan Magistrate
Court which solved the most number of cases. Officials said that a
total of 5,230 cases were resolved and total of Rs 280 crore was
recovered. Giving out a break-up, an official said that a total of Rs
275 crore alone was recovered in cases pertaining to cheque bounce.
He said a total of 6,916 cases were taken up of which 5,008 was
solved. It was also learnt that a total of 2,407 pre-litigation cases
were taken by by these two courts in Chennai and a total of 237 cases
were disposed. The amount settled was worth Rs 2.57 crore.
Across the state, a total of 86,283 pre-litigation cases were taken up
of which 9,381 cases were resolved. A total of Rs 149 crore was
settled.
