Chennai:
Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board has constructed nearly 60,000 tenements for people living in slums but more than half of them are lying vacant for nearly couple of years.
According to figures available with Express a total of nearly 34,000 tenements in Chennai and other towns are lying vacant.
It seems of the nearly 60,000 tenements constructed by slum clearance board, a total of only 26,000 have been allotted
The delay in allotting the tenements has drawn flak from the Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation.
State authorities are fearing that the Centre could stop release of funds for construction of slum tenements due to poor occupation of tenements.
It seems during a meeting on May 26, the union government has rapped the state over the poor occupation of tenements and has instructed it to allot the tenements immediately.
Surprisingly, the slum clearance board sources have stated that the tenements could not be allotted due to want of beneficiaries list from the urban local bodies and district collectors.
Interestingly, efforts to resettle families along the banks of Cooum has yet to take off while 4,100 families living on the banks of Adyar were alloted homes.
It is learnt that a total of more than 13,000 families have been identified to have encroached the banks of river Cooum. A biometric survey has already been done and officials are validating the survey.
On shifting the slum dwellers along the banks of Adyar, the government could not resettle them due to assembly elections, said sources.
It is learnt that a high level meeting chaired by chief secretary will look into the issue. During the meeting, it will be decided on whether the priority should be given to shift those residing along the banks of Adyar or those living along Cooum River.
