Chennai Metro conducts test run in 5km underground stretch between Koyambedu-Shenoy Nagar

Chennai Metro launched its first test run below the ground in the 5km stretch between Koyambedu and Shenoy Nagar on Saturday thus making Chennaites dream of traveling in the underground stretch a step nearer.

A Chennai Metro Rail sources told Express that Chennai Metro started the test run using a metro train in the 5km stretch for the first time after the entire stretch was energised.

“We did use the train once but it was pulled by a wagon car. Now the test run is being done after energising the stretch,” the source said, adding that they were happy with the results.

“The main idea was to check the dimensions of the tunnel. We still have to complete signalling work as well as cables,” said the Metro Rail source. It is also learnt that the platform screen doors at the underground stations also underwent checks.

Metro Rail sources said that the trial run is likely to take place soon once the signalling work is completed but refused to give exact time.,

The track laying works from Shenoy Nagar to Nehru Park is on the verge of completion. “Only 400 metres to 500 metres of track work is left,” said the source. This could mean that immediately after the elevated stretch is opened for commercial run, there are chances that the 5km underground stretch could also be opened for commercial run.

Meanwhile, work on the elevated stretch from St Thomas Mount to Chennai Airport is happening at a rapid pace. It is likely that the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety would undertake inspection next month and this could soon pave the way for commercial operations. Already Railway Designs and Standard Organisation has given the speed certificate to Metro Rail.

It is also learnt that 90 per cent work on the stations in the stretch between Little Mount to Airport is complete
