Chennai:
Chennai Airport’s effort to enhance its cargo throughput by focussing more on technology and less on human interference is paying off as major importers have started increasing their volumes.
Speaking to Express, Airport Authority of India director Deepak Shastri said that the revenue from cargo handling in Chennai Airport has gone up to Rs 27 crore when compared to Rs 22 crore revenue earned during the previous year.
Some of our customers who have migrated to other airports are now coming back due to series of measures undertaken under ease of doing business, says Shastri.
Currently, some of the major importers like Nokia Solutions, Lenovo, Foxcon, Nissan and BMW have increased their volumes.
The cargo throughput upto May 2016 is a total of 42,765 million tonnes as against 31, 649 million tonnes in the previous year.
The success lies in the various schemes which we have introduced, says Shastri. “We have come up with online clearing of consignment besides the latest facilitation of single window clearance introduced by Customs department in the air cargo complex,” he added.
