Chennai:
In what could be the biggest ever cash seizure in the history of Tamil Nadu by an enforcement agency, Income tax sleuths seized Rs 82 crore from institutions linked to Balaji Educational and Charitable Public Trust.
A senior Income Tax source told Express that the raids were conducted in 20 different places by income tax department after it was learnt that four of the institutions linked to the trust were seeking donation for seats in the college.
“The income tax evasion alone accounts to somewhere between Rs 350 crore to Rs 400 crore,” said the official.
The institutions include Mahatma Gandhi Medical College and Research Institute, Puducherry, Sri Sathya Sai Medical College and Research Institute in Thiruporur, Kasturba Gandhi Nursing College, Pillaiyarkuppam, Puducherry, Rajiv Gandhi College of Engineering and Technology, Kirumambakkam, Puducherry.
In Puducherry, income tax officials based on intelligence input seized Rs 41.5 crore from the house of an employee belonging to the Trust in Aryan Kuppam. Similarly, Rs 31 crore was seized from a flat in Thiruporur near Sathya Sai Medical college.
“We also came across evidence where the Trust was paying salary to its doctors partly through bank and partly through cash,” said the official.
“This is an exclusive action of Income Tax department and no other agencies like anti- corruption bureau (ACB) of CBI or anyone was involved,” he said. The raid got over on Saturday night.
