Alandur metro station links both metro rail corridors

C Shivakumar
Chennai:
Alandur Metro rail station is the only station where the two corridors of metro rail intersect and passengers from the two corridors can swap the direction of travel at this station, according to Metro Rail sources.
Metro rail sources said that Alandur will be a multi-level station wherein two corridors merge and it is the only interchange station in the Chennai Metro Rail elevated stations. The station will have four access points on the ground floor, which includes two for entry or exit from the front and two more on the rear. Past the access points, there are ticket counters, one at either side of the lobby.
Crossing the lobby, passengers can move on to level-1 using any of the eight escalators and four lifts. Level-1 is the alighting point for those bound from Guindy-OTA- Airport. From this level there are four escalators and lifts leading to level-2, from where passengers bound for Koyambedu-SIDCO-St.Thomas Mount can embark.
Appropriate signages will also be provided in both levels to avoid passengers’ confusion during change in travel direction. “Sufficient circulation space will be provided for passengers to make interchanges between corridors. Between the ground floor and level-1, there is an intermediate level which will be used by the personnel for maintenance works in the station,” sources added.
Sources said physically challenged passengers will have exclusive facilities such as separate entry ramps, toilets and lift openings have also been designed for easy accommodating. Around the station, space has been provided for parking vehicles. “It is planned in such a way that all the station activities will happen within a single building. The station will be a massive structure with an elegant elevation and shall become a new landmark in the locality,” the sources added.
